- The theory and practice of refusing to eat the meat of dead animals; sometimes taken to include refusing to use ( exploit ) other remains of animals, e.g. by wearing leather. More radical stances include that of vegans, who refuse to use the produce of live animals, such as eggs and milk. Since it is hard to make divisions within the natural order, slippery slopes lead in one direction to the accusation from vegetarians that meat-eaters have no reason for avoiding cannibalism, and in the other direction to the accusation from meat-eaters that vegetarians have to respect the lives of cabbages.
