ball of wax example
The example Descartes uses in the second Meditation to show what is essential to bodies. The ball of wax brought near to the fire changes in its sensible properties, but remains the same substance. The only property abiding through all the other changes is extension, which is therefore confirmed as the one essential property of matter.
