Augustinian view of language
The view that Wittgenstein attributes to Augustine, at the very beginning of the Philosophical Investigations . On this view individual words name objects, and sentences are combinations of names. Wittgenstein goes on to argue that the position fails to differentiate kinds of word, and embodies an oversimple conception of language use.
